Great food with a great view. A family favorite for decades! Open at least one deck for our four legged friends please!
so we came here on a busy weekend, July 4th, where the wait for lunch at the restaurant was over 90 minutes and we decided not to wait. we were able to stop into the gift shop and take a look around which was nice. the smaller cafe on the lower level should also add some more options to their menu as we wanted to eat there after not going to the restaurant but they had very limited options available.
Cute little place with a neat gift shop and fun vibe!
Disappointed in the food for it’s price. Nice view. Management kicked us out because our service dog barked once.
Out of this world stunning views, this is why it is worth visiting Nepenthe. It is really hard to find any other place on Earth with the mountains, forest, ocean and the sunset view at the same time. BUT: the food still needs improvements for the price it costs. I would be happy to see more healthy, light, local (fish and veggie) based fusion dishes. Unfortunately, this direction is still undeveloped at this restaurant. The food is simply mainstream. Rest it is unbelievable experience to be at this place. INSIDER TIP: During Holidays and especially Valentine’s Day the reservations need to be done in advance, otherwise there is a risk of a long waiting time.
Amazing. We got there right about when they were changing to dinner. So all we ordered was fries for me and beer for my bf. The location is jist WOW. The staff are friendly. One thing I did not LIKE is that they are not pet friendly. A family of 4 came with their dog and they had to go back and they never.returned. people travel with dogs as part of the family. So they must consider chaging rules or they will lose customers. If you have a dog don't go there....
Nepenthe is open for dining out on the patio. Menu is straightforward and the quality of the food is excellent. View over the Pacific is breathtaking. As of our visit 2 weeks ago, they were not taking reservations. On a Thursday lunchtime our wait was about 15 minutes.
THE most beautiful spot to watch the sunset along the Big Sur coastal drive. Absolutely magical. Order a glass (or a bottle) of wine and sit high above the cliffs as you watch the sunset. Stay later for dinner and sit around the evening campfire for the moonrise. LOVE this place!
Awesome atmosphere and breathtaking views. Food was really good and price was fair. Highly recommended! The Ambrosia Sauce was GREAT!
Excellent food and service!! Well above average on the drive through Big Sur! Worth the wait!
We ended up having to wait about an hour for them to switch over to dinner. The views were great. Gorgeous weather! The food was good. But not really worth the price. I had the halibut with risotto and broccolini, my boyfriend had the king salmon with cauliflower. We both had a side salad (which is just iceberg lettuce with one tomato and dressing). The flavors were good, but like I said, not worth the cost. The wait staff was very nice and seemed the most knowledgeable about wines (we don't drink).
Great restaurant with a great view. Wish they had more vegetarian options. They are taking good precautions to keep their guests safe during Covid times.
Great location, Covid appropriate service and attentive staff.
The views! What more can I say? The food was okay, nothing I would rave about. But the vibe and views are outstanding. It came highly recommended and now I know why. I would definitely hit it a second time if I were in the area.
Not only is their food amazing, they very aptly and carefully handled social distancing to keep their customers safe, while preparing my to-go meal very quickly. Only downside: my Ambrosia Burger was a fraction of its normal, non-pandemic size, which was disappointing. Even with that, it tasted as amazing as always. Fries were plentiful, as always...quite simply, this place continues to be a must visit.
Ddnt get a chance to eat here. Wanna try this since it’s highly rated. On Thursday afternoon (aug 6) , around 3 pm, i was not expecting long lines. We were second in line, and the first family ahead of us has to wait 30 mins to get seated, so we decided to leave. I grabbed a menu- quite expensive . 19 dollars for a veg burger to 40 dollars. Well, what to expect during pandemic, every service is limited. Loved the phoenix shop though and its quaint decors
Amazing food with amazing views. Get the ambrosia burger. If you want something else more rich, go for the filet mignon.
Breathe taken views. Definitely stop here while visiting Big Sur. Have lunch when possible. Hopefully this pandemic will be over soon. The shop is cute and loaded with many goods and great souvenirs
Food was average and overpriced. The view is fantastic. Service was good, they were kind and attentive. That's about it
This place is absolutely stunning. It’s by far one of the most amazing sunsets I have EVER seen. We enjoyed the food, the drinks, everything about it was incredible. Loved spending an incredible evening there with my boyfriend, at the time, now husband, enjoying ourselves and that trip! Amazing!
This place is amazing!!! I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu and the views! Do yourself a favor and make this stop on Route 1.
Legendary restaurant built up from the Orson Welles-Rita Hayworth honeymoon cottage by Bill and Lolly Fassett in 1949. What a site! Parking can be a challenge, alas, but be patient. Restaurant is just fine, you will wait, but that gives you more time to enjoy the place. Maybe the best thing at the site is The Phoenix, one of the all time great gift shops. Run by nice folk who must manage the heavy traffic.
Went here for dinner on a Monday. Service: 1 starFood: 1 starAtmosphere: 3 star They will tell you the ‘Fries are famous’. It actually tastes like frozen grocery store fries that are a day old. I wouldn’t order the rib eye. It’s not well cooked. They don’t know how to render the fat. The fat is chewy and hard.
Nice view, a bit pricey, and long wait
Incredible views on a clear day! The food and service were great. I’d highly recommend stopping here on your way down south or going north. We got there right at 11:30 when they were opening on February 5th 2020. The place was packed shortly after we arrived. I’m sure dinner there would be awesome to see the sunset.
We had a lovely lunch here last month. You are definitely paying for the remoteness of the location but it's an amazing view and friendly staff. One star was removed for the lack of options for the gluten free member of our party. He had the same thing as me, but the burger came on a few pieces of lettuce, leaving him hungry after the meal. Was a little bit of a bummer.
Great view, great service, great food. Visited with my wife during a highway one roadtrip from SF to LA. Can definitely recommend the restaurant, as well as the roadtrip. California is just amazing. Loved the weather, loved the landscape, loved the people (we're from Germany). Cheers
Stunning views, amazing food. Although super crowded, as not many places to eat in Big Sur
Such a fun spot to visit whenever we come to big sur. Such a moody feel l there with the fog in the trees overlooking the ocean. Great place for drinks and the shoo there is so lovely. Lots of beautifully curated items. I always find something special here❤️
If your driving Hwy 1 near Big Sur it's a must stop for lunch or dinner. A little pricey, but you are paying for an outstanding view while enjoying your meal. We were able to see whales in the water below while ate lunch. The gift shop is great too. We stop by every time we go by because we find thing in the shop we don't see anywhere else.
The food was awesome but pricey. A side of fries were $10. There arent many options for dining around that area of big sur. The view was absolutely incredible. The customer service was great. Seating was a bit snug but they had the heaters to keep us toasty. Really really great view of the ocean meeting the sky.
Incredible ocean view of Big Sur from their patio. This is a unique, massive restaurant in the middle of nowhere. A bit pricey, but worth the splurge for a fancy meal in such a great atmosphere. Try the Ambrosia burger and amazing homemade apple pie.
Amazing views of the Pacific Ocean, with a delicious menu. Everything tastes great and you're definitely paying for the location. Prices here are pretty expensive, but that's what you get when you combine a fantastic location with great quality.Nepenthe makes the best bloody marys ever!
Million dollar view, and decent food. Prices are definitely high, but I guess it's for the scenery and not necessarily for great eats. You won't be disappointed with the food, but nothing to brag about. Friendly service, albeit on the slow side.
Great place with stunning views, tasty food, and friendly service. Shrimp BLT is to die for. Thick, cooked to perfection shrimp, tomato jam, thick smoked bacon. Great sandwich! Burger with signature sauce is worth mentioning too. I would suggest the owners to add some cold gazpacho soup for hot days instead of a chowder. Overall, must stop by place suitable for a quick bite or romantic dinner. Thank you for hospitality!
Was a great experience. Devon was our waiter and he made our time there great. He was very versed in the wines that Nepenthe offered. Highly recommend.
Beautiful place nestling on a cliff in gorgeous sceanery with great food and lovely gifts
The wife and I visited recently on a road trip up north on my birthday. We arrived around 2:30pm and waited in line for about 10-15 minutes to be seated. Once inside we had a glass of Rose and took in the beautiful view. We waited about another 5-7 minutes and we were seated. The servers were super nice and I even got a mug because it was my birthday. We had the Ambrosiaburger and the Shrimp BLT and I preferred the BLT. Combination of bacon and shrimp was great. The Triple Berry pie was really tasty. If you like berries it's a must try. Everyone was social distancing and had their masks on. Be careful with the birds in the nearby trees that will swoop in out of nowhere to grab a dry of your table!
I went last Tuesday with my husband and our 1 year old daughter. It was so awesome. The food was really good and the drinks rocked. The service was fantastic. I took my friend today and she loved it aswell. 4 hour drive round trip. Totally worth it. The parking lot is a bit small but, both times I found parking. It felt really nice to do something normal.
Yesterday my family and I decided to go to the beach & then to go out for dinner to a nice place. My 2year old twins development speacialist recommended that we go eat here. So my family and I decided to go.... I was asked to tell my kids to be quiere or leave. This was so heart breaking to me. I felt humiliated. It was so embarrassing my kids were signing and playing while sitting on a high chair. We are in a pandemic my kids and I have not been in a restaurant for at least 4 months how do you expect for them to know how to act. They are kids.
Views were great and so was the food. The offer great patio dining with measures in place forCOVID-19. Only downside is no online reservations at this time.
You will feel a serenity as you gaze through the trees. At the gentle ocean . A place of of joy and calm.. wonderful staff throughout. Never wanted to leave. Lol! Watching a little bird hop down and grab a co- diner's fry was unforgettable! I enjoyed the moment as much as the bird.. maybe not so much the guy who lost the fry..😇
Amazing server Abraham took care of us. It was a long wait but the view was perfect. They food was also delicious. I had the beat salad and my spouse has the shrimp blt. The food was worth the wait and the service was the best we have experienced all weekend. Everything was very spaced out. All staff was appropriately wearing masks. All guests walking around were reminded to put on masks. Great management and a great environment.
The scenery is superb! Food is great quality too. It's such a unique place to visit that is worth the trip. The food is on the (very) expensive end, but that's to be expected given the quality and setting, and besides, you're paying not just for the food but for the experience as well.
Staff was excellent and food was good. A little pricey but worth it for the incredible views.
Beautiful setting. Up on a hill. Overlooking the ocean, with a panoramic view. Food is good. A little on the expensive side. Go before sunset and enjoy it from their terrace. There is outdoor and indoor seating. They set up heat lamps for outdoor in the winter. Get there early cause it does get busy.
5 star views if it is not foggy. When it’s busy, there is a line to get in the waitlist. There’s about 45min to over an hour wait once you’re in the waitlist. By that time if you move on, you’re already in Carmel getting your order.
My favorite restaurant ever. The ambrosia burger is perfection. Gorgeous patio location for dining during Covid restrictions. Plus you get a great drive up or down Hwy 1 to get there. Check out the shop and gallery too.
Wonderful place, wonderful service, and delicious food! Don't miss out on the Shrimp BLT!
The food was ok. You are definitely paying for the view. Make sure to check their love weather camera and make sure it isn't too foggy. Sometimes the fog is so thick you can't see anything at all.
